I Took a Day Off (and Nothing Fell Apart)
There’s a myth in entrepreneurship that if it’s not all hands on deck, even for a day, the whole vision fails.
But I’m here to tell you that I just spent fifteen nights on a cruise ship.
During tax season.
And not only did the sky not fall, but I came back with more peace, gratitude, and energy than I’ve had in months.
Let’s Rewind.
Though I booked the trip on a whim (6 weeks before setting sail), I planned. I prepped. I automated where I could, and made rest part of my business strategy.
Not a reward I had to earn.
Still, when the ship set sail, I felt the familiar itch to check e-mail, peek at my task list (what’s usually called a to-do list), or “just take a quick glance” at a spreadsheet.
But then, a strange and wonderful thing happened:
I stopped.
I looked out at the ocean. I listened to live music. I drank something fruity with a tiny umbrella.
I even had a couple of days in a row where I didn’t open my laptop, and I didn’t feel guilty.
Because rest isn’t a luxury; it’s a lifestyle. (Oof! I needed this reminder.)
As small business owners, we’re often the engine, the wheels, and the driver. And if we don’t refuel, we will burn out.
But a restful break doesn’t have to be dramatic. It can start small:
- Taking a Friday afternoon off on purpose
- Scheduling space between meetings
- Saying “not this week” to new projects
When you build rest into your workflow, you don’t just protect your energy, you sharpen it.
I came back from that cruise with fresh ideas, a happier nervous system, and a renewed ability to help others mind their business without losing themselves in it.
So if you need a sign to take a breath, or a break, this is it.
Not because you’ve “earned it.” But because you’re allowed.
To your success always,
Paula
